Common questions
My step count shows zero
Just Steps reads your steps from Apple Health, so it needs permission to do that. Open the Health app on your iPhone, tap your profile picture, and check that step access is turned on for Just Steps. The app itself will offer this hint whenever your count sits at zero, and the iPhone app has a walkthrough under More, Steps not showing, that goes through it screen by screen.
I cannot find the complication on my watch face
Press and hold your watch face, tap Edit, swipe to Complications, and choose a slot. The app is listed under J for Just Steps.
If it does not appear in the list at all, restart your watch. watchOS sometimes needs a restart before a newly installed app shows up there.
My complication is not updating
watchOS decides how often complications refresh, and it does so less frequently to save battery. Opening the app updates it immediately.
I am not getting notifications
Check both switches on the third page of the app, and make sure notifications are allowed for Just Steps in the Watch app on your iPhone. The goal notification only fires between 9am and 9pm, and the evening reminder only arrives at 7pm on days you are still short of your goal.
Why do older days say "No goal data"?
Apple Health has been recording your steps since long before you installed this app, so your history goes back further than the app does. For days from before you installed it, there is no goal on record, and the app says so rather than judging those days against a goal you never set. Every day from your first launch onwards keeps the goal that was actually in force.
Does it need my iPhone?
No. Just Steps runs perfectly fine without ever opening the phone app.
What does the iPhone app do?
It is somewhere to look back. Your watch has room for a number and a ring; the iPhone has room for the history behind it, by day, week and month, with your average and your best day so far.
Your goal still belongs to the watch. The iPhone app cannot change it, so the watch keeps working on its own rather than becoming something you manage from a phone. The second tab holds the walkthroughs, the answers to common questions, and a way to send feedback.
My average or best day differs between the two
Your iPhone keeps far more step history than your watch does, so it can see records and work out averages the watch cannot. The two apps share those numbers with each other, so open both once and they will agree. A best day only ever rises, so neither device can talk the other out of a record.
